Automne 2005. Me voici à la Centrale, à Hossegor, jouant les reporters pour la presse locale. Là, se tiennent les championnats de France de sauvetage côtier, un sport que je rêve de promouvoir à travers la création d’un magazine spécialisé. Je suis impressionné par un junior de Biarritz, en finale de l’oceanman. Il s’agit de John Despergers, qui dompte l’océan, au nez et à la barbe de watermen aguerris. 19 ans plus tard, John est le coach principal du club basque et règne toujours sur l’épreuve reine du sauvetage, comme en témoigne son succès, en septembre dernier à Dinard.

Autre moment phare de la saison écoulée, les mondiaux de Kurrawa ont vu les juniors français devancer les Néo-Zélandais sur le côtier (!), tandis que les seniors préservaient avec brio leur 3ème place planétaire. Avec comme figures de proue Annah Abravanel et Magali Rousseau, respectivement championnes du monde sur les beach flags et le 200 SLS.

Par ailleurs, les grands chelems inédits d’Elise Daudignon, lors de l’Oceanperf Challenge puis durant les championnats de France, ont incontestablement marqué l’année 2024. A titre personnel, l’image que je garderai de l’année passée est celle de Tom Durager, déplaçant les mannequins au fond du bassin Léo Lagrange, à Toulouse lors des N2. Ce jeune sauveteur, recordman du monde junior, est un bénévole comme les autres. Et symbolise, on ne peut mieux, l’esprit singulier de notre discipline.

The French Surf Lifesaving Championships are being held there, a sport I dream of promoting through the creation of a specialized magazine. I’m impressed by a junior ahtlete from Biarritz, in the oceanman final. Nineteen years later, John Despergers is the head coach of the Basque club (Biarriz Sauvetage Côtier) and still reigns supreme over the flagship lifesaving event, as demonstrated by his success last September in Dinard.

Another highlight of the season was the World Championships in Kurrawa, where the French juniors beat the New Zealanders in the ocean section, while the seniors brilliantly maintained their 3rd place position in the world rankings. Leading the way were Annah Abravanel and Magali Rousseau, world champions in the beach flags and 200m Super Lifesaver respectively.

Additionally, Elise Daudignon’s unprecedented grand slams, first at the Oceanperf Challenge and then at the French Championships, were undoubted highlights of 2024. On a personal note, the image that remains with me from last year is that of Tom Durager, moving manikins at the bottom of the Léo Lagrange pool in Toulouse during the National 2 Championships. This young lifeguard, world junior record-holder, helping out like everyone else is a perfect symbol of the unique spirit of our sport.
